Rules Information and Limitations

Over the years, hundreds of people have written to Masters Traditional Games and its owner, James Masters requesting the rules for specific traditional games. In order to satisfy this need and also to promote the playing of Traditional Games in general, Masters Games has undertaken to publish as many traditional games rules as time permits.

The rules given are the basic rules required to play the game on a friendly basis. Remarks and advice are included to aid understanding where appropriate since the plain rules by themselves are often not enough to enjoy the game properly. The rules of most traditional games vary widely from country to country, county to county and sometimes even pub to pub so the rules do not claim to be "official" or league-standard. Where two or more distinct and popular variations exist, we will give the rules for each variation individually.

For certain more popular traditional games and sports where there global or globally authoritative bodies exist such as Cricket, Tennis, Pool, Rounders and so forth, there seems little point in publishing rules when they are already well-documented on the Internet. For those sports, we have provided a page of Links to Official Rules. We also won't normally print rules for modern games like Scrabble or Settlers of Catan for the same reason but concentrate on the sort of games that can be found on the non-commercial website The Online Guide to Traditional Games.

Copyright and Agreement for Copying Rules

All published rules are copyrighted.

We would be very pleased if you should see fit to link to our website from yours. This is the most sensible way to provide rules to browsers of your site because we do regularly add to and improve the rules based upon feedback we receive. If you just copy them, your rules are likely to be out of date and/or not as good as our current set of rules.

Even so, if you prefer to copy the rules onto your website, we don't mind but ONLY if you:
*notify us

  • include the copyright info & information on copyright and about Masters Traditional Games
  • include at least one link to the Masters Traditional Games website for each page of rules.

Similarly, you are welcome to copy the rules onto printed materials - books, periodicals or magazines but ONLY if you notify us

  • include all the copyright and information about Masters Traditional Games
  • include the Masters Traditional Games website address.

These rules represent a great deal of effort, time and research and we will take legal action if we discover any infringements of these instructions or our copyright.

No responsibility will be taken by Masters Games for the accuracy of rules although every effort is made to ensure that they are complete and correct. It's just a free service to make the world a happier place!
