Rules Information and Limitations

About

Over the years, hundreds of people have written to Masters Games and its owner, James Masters requesting the rules for specific traditional games. In order to satisfy this need and also to promote the playing of Traditional Games in general, Masters Games has undertaken to publish as many traditional games rules as time permits.

The rules given are the basic rules required to play the game on a friendly basis.  Remarks and advice will be included to aid understanding where appropriate since the plain rules by themselves are often not enough to enjoy the game properly.  The rules of most traditional games vary widely from country to country, county to county and sometimes even pub to pub so the rules do not claim to be "official" or league-standard. Where two or more distinct and popular variations exist, we will give the rules for each variation individually.

The Masters Games Rules Disclaimer applies

It is not our objective to publish League standard regulations covering every possible scenario.  Nor do we publish official rules as given by local, national or international regulating bodies - if that is what you require, please contact the league or the sporting body concerned.

For certain more popular traditional games and sports where there global or globally authoritative bodies exist such as Cricket, Tennis, Pool and so forth, there seems little point in publishing rules when they are already well-documented on the Internet. For those sports, we have provided a page of Links to Official Rules.

Limitations

Masters Games does not provide rules for card games except for Cribbage nor for games consisting only of dice.

Rules are normally be an accepted modern interpretation.  We are not able to publish rules as played in previous centuries, unfortunately.

Rules are produced for TRADITIONAL games only.  Monopoly and Scrabble are not traditional.  Neither is American Football or Squash.  The only exceptions are Halma and Chinese Checkers - two modern commercial games that Masters Games does have rules for.  If in doubt, please investigate the non-commercial website The Online Guide to Traditional Games.  The sort of games you'll find on there are the sort of games we're talking about.

Please bear in mind that rules vary from place to place and over time.   Normally, the most widely accepted English version of the game will be given first but other popular variations are sometimes also included.

These rules are provided by Masters Traditional Games, an Internet shop selling quality traditional games, pub games and unusual games. For information on copying and copyright, see our disclaimer.

Our rules are comprehensive instructions for friendly play. If in doubt, always abide by locally-played or house rules.
