Skittle Pin Timber Information

Many hardwoods have been used for Skittle pins over the years including Sycamore, Applewood, Maple and probably strongest of all Hornbeam (still used by players of the old game of London Skittles). Presently, Masters Traditional Games manufactures skittle pins from Rubberwood and Beech. They are suitable both for fun and for serious skittling.

Quarter Sawn Beech Skittle Pins

Our Beech pins are turned from quarter-sawn British Beech timber. Our turner carefully selects timber of an adequate quality and does not use timber that is cannot be quarter sawn to a sufficient size. The trunks are cut into quarters and then the heartwood is cut out and removed - pins that retain the hardwood usually split badly. The remaining planks are then dried for at least a few weeks before turning. Where Masters Traditional games holds our own stock we specify that the timber is dried for at least 2 months before turning.

The pins are dipped in a fungicide to provide a measure of anti-mould protection and are then finished / dipped with a coat of hard gloss varnish.

Some quarter sawn Beech pins are held in stock and can be dispatched immediately - other types are made to order. The leadtime can be seen in the price table when ordering.

Our quarter sawn Beech pins are solid wood without joins and are probably the best quality skittle pins available.

Rubberwood Skittle pins

Our Rubber wood pins use timber sourced from overseas but are turned in England. Rubber wood pins may be made from more than one piece of bonded timber - some skittle teams don't like this but normally the bonds between the timber are stronger than the wood itself and can hardly be seen. Our Rubberwood pins are used successfully by many skittles teams and pubs across the country and should generally last for at least a season under normal useage. They are good quality pins that are less expensive than the solid wood pins.

The Rubberwood pins are given a waxed and oiled finish. But they are not varnished or dipped.

Rubberwood Skittle pins are normally dispatched quickly but occasionally run out of stock at busy times of year. Give us a ring to check stock if lead time is important to you.

Skittle Pin Wear and Tear

Both Rubberwood and Beech skittle pins tend to deteriorate over time by denting. Ideally they should be rubbed down with a linseed oil rag at the end of each session.

For information on what to do if you have a problem with a skittle pin, please read our Timber Quality Statement.
