Aunt Sally
Aunt Sally is a hugely popular pub game in the county of Oxfordshire and is a thriving sport that has spread to other areas of England in recent times. The idea is simply to knock the Aunt Sally doll cleanly off a swivel on the top of a post by throwing wooden sticks at it. It's an old game that is great fun, whether you're playing in a pub league or less seriously in your back garden! From Masters Traditional Games, only quality equipment will do. Our Aunt Sally manufacturer has been producing Aunt Sally equipment for more than 40 years.
Aunt Sally is not suitable for young children. People should
stand well clear of the throwing area at all times.
Aunt Sally Sets
Click on the picture to enlarge.Sticks are 18 inches long, 2 inches diameter and made from kiln-dried Beechwood. The ends of the sticks are waxed but have not been treated in any other way - some people may wish to apply a preserver such as linseed oil before use. The post is just a standard 3/4 inch metal gas pipe cut to a length of 3 foot, 6 inches. The first foot should be buried in the ground. Note that if the ground is quite soft, you may need a longer post. Weights are approximate - changes in humidity and temperature cause the weight of timber to vary over time. Please refer to our Timber Quality Statement. It is a good idea to treat the sticks once a season with a preservative (we recommend Sadolin as this dries quickly) or Linseed oil (which takes a few days to dry).

In the old days, players used to oil their sticks and then bury them in sand for the winter!
Aunt Sally Dolls
Dimensions are 15cm high x 9cm diameter.

painted and a real clay pipe was stuck in her mouth!
Aunt Sally Post and Swivel Iron
Click on the picture to enlarge. For your convenience, we do now make available these pre-cut gas pipe posts that should work fine. A swivel-iron arm is also available - one end fits to the top of the post and the Aunt Sally doll rests upon the small round platform at the other end (the swivel-iron should be attached to the top of a post so that the bottom of the doll is 30 inches above the ground).
Aunt Sally Backdrop
Click on the picture to enlarge. For tournaments and more serious play, a PVC Polyester Aunt Sally backdrop is available. The sheet comes with eyelets around the edges and rope sufficient to tie the sheet to the surrounding frame and is available in three sizes. The sheet is made in the traditional colours of green with a black dot (made from panama weave material) in the middle. We cannot supply a frame but the frame can be made in the same way as a football goal and needs to surround the sheet with around 6 inches gap so that the sheet can be tied to it in the manner of a trampoline. The sheets do come with sufficient rope to tie the sheet to the frame. A typical frame is 6.5 feet high and 7, 9 or 10 feet wide. The most common size is 6 x 6 feet but if you would like a higher or a wider sheet, select from the options below (you must specify orientation because the target spot is always placed at the same height, regardless of the size of the backdrop).
