Mahogany Pencil Oware (Gye Nyame)

Masters Traditional Games has gone to great lengths to obtain genuine Oware boards from West Africa. It is easy to buy Chinese-manufactured boards but why do that when you can have the real thing?

Mancala is the classic game of Africa that could well be the oldest board game in the world. There are hundreds of versions of the game throughout Asia and Africa but Oware from West Africa and the Caribbean is the best known. It is also the version of Mancala usually played at competition level; however, it is simple to learn and great for children- enhancing both maths and strategy skills.

These straightforward boards are hand-made in Ghana from a hardwood of the Mahogany family but do not have storage holes for the captured seeds. This version has a Gye Nyame symbol carved into the top which is the Adinkra symbolizing the omnipotence and immortality of God.

Includes real Bonduc seeds and a rules sheet. If you want to play Mancala the proper way, then this is your chance!

The game is hand-made by a Ghanaian craftsman. It is not intricate, high quality carving work in Western terms but it has a beauty of its own that is typical of the region. As with all hand-made products, there are minor imperfections, patterns vary and surfaces may not be perfectly flat. Of course, the uniqueness of each board is part of its character but this may not be to everyone's taste.

NOTE: The seeds included with these boards represent a choking hazard for small children. Not recommended for children under 5 years old.
