Coconut Shy Balls
Our standard coconut balls are 2 inches (5cm) diameter and made from White Birchwood. They have a small flat area on them so are not perfectly spherical and some may have knot marks or small imperfections in them. However, they are perfect for their purpose and rather nicer than is necessary, given that they will soon be heavily battered!

Well, we have seen the 2 inch balls used successfully at a crockery smash stand but ONLY because they were soaked in a bucket of water. They are not really heavy enough as they stand. If you soak them in a bucket of water they become a great deal heavier and should work but please note that they will deteriorate much more quickly when wet!
The light 2 inch coconut shy balls are quite difficult to be successful with (as designed for fairgrounds) and weigh approx. 35 - 45g. For those who wish to give throwers or children a better chance, we have also made available some 3 inch balls which weigh approx. 115 - 125g. Before opting for the additional expense, however, you may wish to consider that there are other ways to reduce the difficulty such as standing children closer to the coconuts, balancing the coconuts more precariously on the poles or soaking the balls in water to make them heavier (but bear in mind that the balls will deteriorate much more quickly if they are wet).

The Coconut shy (or Coconut shie) goes back centuries and is related both to the traditional pub game Aunt Sally, as well as old English fair games in which sticks were thrown at prizes balanced on the top of poles. |
