The Richard the Lionheart chess set depicts the characters surrounding the Royal Court at this time and is outstanding in the level of detail in the pieces. Richard I was known as the "Coeur de Lion" because of his miltary reputation. At only 16, Richard had his own command, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, Henry II. Richard was a central Christian commander during the Third Crusade, effectively leading the campaign after the departure of Philip Augustus, and scoring considerable victories against his Muslim counterpart, Saladin.
The regular Chess set is made from ground stone resin and comes in contrasting brown and ivory shades so that opposing pieces are easily distinguished. In the decorated version of the Chess set the clothing, weaponry and accessories have all been painstakingly hand-painted.
